Act Two - Vive la France!

Hello again. After our little break on home soil we're back on our travels and we were so pleased to escape the snow! That wasn't supposed to happen! The idea was that we would keep apace with the sun all year and not see a single flake of snow. Well, the best laid plans....

It was brilliant to catch up with many friends and family. Thank you to everyone who fed us, gave us a bed or simply sat and had a good old chat. I am sorry we didn't see everyone, but schedules don't always coincide. We will see you to catch up in July. Save all your news until then, or, better still, keep texting or e-mailing. Thank you to my brother and his lovely wife who put up with us, and our coming and going. We loved staying with you.

We had a great couple of days in Liverpool, even if it was freezing! What a shock to the system that cold spell was. We always have a good laugh when we get together, Liam fed us well and Alex entertained us, as usual. We visited Crosby beach to see Anthony Gormley's figures. Loved them!

Had a quick look round Southport too. Nothing much to say about that!

Alex was supposed to bring my new kindle - to replace the one I stood on and fatally injured - which I ordered from Tesco and he picked up in Sheffield. Did he bring it? No, obviously not. So, after leaving Thirsk on Tuesday we detoured via Sheffield, where we stayed the night and nursed a sick son back to health! We woke up on Wednesday to find the whole world had turned white. Still, it made Sheffield look pretty.....

We left Sheffield nice and early and began our long and tedious journey down a snowy and very busy M1. The snow, and then sleet, eventually stopped and just past Oxford the sun came out! Arriving at Folkestone a little after 1.30 the journey had taken us just over 5 hours, much longer than usual. The crossing was very quick though and we were soon bowling through northern France, shoulders back down and looking forward to the next stage of our adventures.

We are staying with a lovely couple, Brigitte and Christopher (French and English respectively), in a beautiful house in Gasny just outside Giverny. What a lovely day we have had today, although it is still very cold, we visited Monet's house and garden, along with every school in the area. There were children everywhere!

The garden is gorgeous, and the mellow pink house sits regally in it, framed by lovely pink tulips.

We met a couple from Washington DC who were very chatty. After a pleasant half an hour we secured an invitation to their home. I can feel another trip coming on....

From there we visited Vernon, a mediaeval town with narrow cobbled streets, so typically French. Into the nearest boulangerie and patisserie where Jim was in heaven.

We drove along the Seine Valley through La Roche Guyon with it's stunning chateau, past the chalk cliffs and ended up in Vetheuil where we walked along the Seine.

Tomorrow we're on the train for a day in Paris and hoping it's slightly warmer than today.

Meant to get warm again next week... might help your pale complexion!
